Mike Dodson's '04 GTO w/ATI ProCharger D-1SC
This update from: 01/22/2005

Mike Dodson brought his GTO down to us from near Detroit Michigan to have us install an ATI ProCharger D-1SC on his '04 GTO. We chose the ATI "tuner" kit for this GTO, which does not come with an FMU (fuel management unit) or a computer upgrade. We chose the "tuner" kit because it allows us to tune the car ourselves on our dyno, and allows us to precisely tune the engine to the optional components that the customer may have on their car. No two engines dyno alike, and head/cam combinations along with headers, etc all play a part in correctly tuning one of these engines. With the ATI ProCharger "tuner" kit you have to also buy larger fuel injectors, plus we recommend installing a larger fuel pump.

Mike's car actually looked to be a deeper red until we washed the Michigan salt off of it for him, from his drive down here to us. The GTO is actually Mike's "winter" car. When we get done with it, Mike's "summer" car (WS6 Convertible) isn't going to be able to keep up!

Mike already had Stainless Works install their new GTO Cat Back system on his car, and had us install Stainless Works headers. We also installed a BMR one piece driveshaft, which replaces the two piece driveshaft and the carrier bearing.

We unbolted the front K Member and lowered it down several inches to install the Stainless Works headers. These headers fit really good, and look great! We wrapped the header tubes with header tape where they were in close proximity to the front suspension boots.

The Stainless Works headers look great!

The fuel tank is easily accessed through the trunk, and is easier to remove than it is on the F Body's. We were able to modify a Holley/Walbro pn# 12-914 255 litre forced induction fuel up pump to work in the GTO bucket that is in the fuel tank.

We drilled several extra holes in the bottom of the fuel pump bucket, for the fuel pump to pick up fuel. GM only has only little 3/8" hole for the fuel to enter the bucket, and will not supply the extra amount of fuel that we need.  This stock oem opening can be seen at the bottom right side of the fuel bucket in the picture, entering into the side of the fuel bucket.

This is the fuel tank brace that is found in the trunk. It appears that  it's sole purpose is to prevent items from the trunk from impacting into the fuel tank. We weighed this assembly and it weighs 23.8 lbs!

The ATI ProCharger installation has begun! All of the parts arrived this week from Accessible Technologies, Inc (ATI)  Thanks to Deborah at ATI for pushing the items through for this kit that looked to be backordered. We usually see ATI's supercharger kits within one weeks time from when we place the order, but the vendors for ATI's GTO kit are still gearing up to speed.

In these two pictures you can't help but notice the mighty ATI ProCharger D-1SC. The D-1SC is capable of putting out up to 20 pounds of boost, and yet is flexible enough to efficiently run it at 7 pounds of boost without any problems at all. The self contained oil feature of these excellent ATI ProChargers means that there are no oil lines to run to the engine, no way for contamination from the blower to the engine, and vice versa. Another great feature of these superchargers is that the engine will still see excellent gas mileage under low boost conditions, which will make this GTO an excellent highway cruiser.

The thin sheetmetal piece shown above is located behind the front bumper. When we mounted the ATI ProCharger supplied front mount intercooler, we saw that when we reinstalled this front piece, flow to the intercooler would of been restricted. We cut out the above center section to allow more flow to enter the intercooler.

You can see just how big the ATI ProCharger intercooler that is supplied with the GTO ProCharger kit in this picture.

This picture shows just how much more flow will get to the intercooler with the modification that we did to the sheetmetal.

The ATI ProCharger GTO kits comes with a new power steering cooler, to replace the factory one. The power steering cooler is relocated to make room for the ATI supplied supercharger components.

Here is a view of the intercooler plumbing on the driver side.

Here is a good picture of the completed ATI ProCharger install from the engine compartment. In this picture we have not yet reinstalled the engine cover.

That is Brent Malone at the bottom of the picture getting the GTO strapped down on our chassis dyno.

After the tuning was done, we were pleasantly surprised with the horsepower and torque that we picked up. Before the headers and supercharger were installed, this GTO was in the low 290 range at the tires.

450 rwhp was what we ended up with, at 8lbs of boost and 18 degrees of timing.

449 ft lbs of torque, and the torque starts to really come in pretty early, as can be seen in the graph shown below.

The intercooler looks really good tucked back behind the bumper. You don't notice the modification that we did to the sheetmetal behind the bumper, but it sure is going to help out the airflow to the intercooler!

Here is one last look at the GTO before Mike picks the car up and drives it home. Mike now has one awesome winter car!         Hey Mike, shouldn't your summer car be faster than your winter car?
