Chris Avery and his 1998 Trans-Am with an OFI Turbo Kit
This update from: 09/20/2008

Chris Avery has a 1998 Trans-Am that we have done a lot of work on over the last several years. Chris has wisely added parts as he could afford to do so, to ultimately build up to having us install a power adder. Chris was initially going to have us add an ATI ProCharger, but Jake talked him into going to an OFI turbo kit. This turbo kit is much more labor intensive than what is required to install an ATI ProCharger, but in the end it should give us excellent results.

Chris had us install a Moser 9 inch Truetrac with 3.70 gears, and ABS/TCS back in April of 2006. Only time will tell if the Truetrac is going to handle the power that we'll be putting to it now!

In May of 2007 Chris had us rebuild his engine for him. We used a Compstar 4.0" stroke crankshaft to turn the engine into a 383. We also used Compstar connecting rods along with Diamond pistons and Total Seal rings. The camshaft is a small 224/228 on a 114 LSA. We used an ARP main stud kit as well as ARP head studs, and Cometic head gaskets. We topped it off with Chris's AFR 205cc cylinder heads. We sold and install for Chris Kooks 1-7/8 race headers and y pipe which we took off and sold for Chris during this build.
Chris also had us install a BMR k member and upper and lower a arms while we had the engine and suspension assembly dropped out of his car. These components are much lighter and take up less space than the oem parts do.

In October of 2007 Chris had us install a 4L80 stage 4 transmission that he purchased from FLP. We sold and install a Vigilante 3 disc converter and a PST 3.5" alum driveshaft at the same time, along with a BMR TCC020 crossmember.
We also sold and install for Chris at this time a Bigstuff3 computer system, which allows for so much more input than the factory system can provide.

At the heart of this kit can be seen an S-85 turbocharger. This turbo is much larger than what comes with the base OFI kit, and should easily give Chris's engine all the boost the four bolt heads can handle!

OFI's 1-3/4 headers can be seen in this picture. We trial fitted everything together and once we had everything fitting the way it needed to be, we then took it all apart to be sent to Jet Hot.

OFI Intercooler and Radiator Installation:

The Ohio Forced Inductions kit comes with an 3.00" bar and plate air to air intercooler, with 5 ply silicone and T Bolt clamps. OFI also supplies these kits with a custom 3.50" radiator.

The larger optional 4.00" downpipe had to be modified to fit around the larger 4L80E transmission.

Fuel system:

We used a Nasty Performance Stage 2 kit to supply the fuel for this build, which includes their fuel tank.

The fuel system as well as a catalog full of BMR parts can be seen in this picture.

We mounted the regulator to where it is easily adjusted from down below, but somewhat tamper proof from up above.

Battery Box:

We needed to use the space up front where the battery was installed from the factory , so we relocated the battery to the truck area. Chris told us he never takes the t tops off and that we could locate the box where we have it shown. We used a Moroso battery box and vented it out under the car.

We installed a Moroso battery quick disconnect assembly since the battery is now in the rear.

The battery shut off rod can be seen here under the taillight.

We installed coil relocation brackets from Katech on Chris's Trans-Am.

Kevin did a great job of routing the fuel lines, and they will be wrapped in DEI fire sleeve. We are reusing Chris's Fast 90mm throttle body and we used an intake elbow from intakeelbows.com.

Turbo related pipes:

We had some modifications to do to the piping to make it work with the 4L80E transmssion that we had installed for Chris last year. Once everything fit with amply clearance we packed all the piping up in a box and sent it to Jet Hot to have them coat it for us.

The parts are back from Jet Hot, and do they look great! Jesse and Kevin can be seen here unpacking one of the two boxes.

All the pipes are shown laid out and ready to install.

Shown is the passenger side header and lines we wrapped with DEI Fire Sleeve.

The turbo is installed!

It is starting to take shape!

We wrapped the wiring to isolate it from the heat from the driver side header.

We made a bracket to help keep the turbo secure.

Kevin can be seen here routing the plumbing. That 4.00" down pipe looks massive!

Here is a view of some of the plumbing down by the suspension.

We ordered up an alternator relocation kit to move the alternator to give us some needed clearance.

The Moroso oil breather can be seen here.

Most of the plumbing is now done, this engine will be ready to fire back up real soon! Delphi 96lb fuel injectors were added to handle the extra fuel requirements.

New valve cover gaskets showed up and the valvecovers are now back in place.

The exhaust system is finished. The 4.00" exhaust posed some problems getting it to route and clear everything.

Yes, there is actually clearance in there.

Kevin did a great job of keeping the system mounted up high, ground clearance won't be a problem.

We fired Chris's car up and it sounded awesome, up until the insides of the turbo touched down!

The top edge of the turbo has machining material that had not been removed. We found several pieces of this inside the turbo.
We had to remove the turbo and send it back in to get it rebuilt. Hopefully the car won't be down too long.

Forced Inductions is upgrading the turbo to a 91mm wheel while they are fixing the turbo, for no extra charge!  They were going to machine the turbo this week so we should have it back asap.

The turbo came back to us very quickly, and we installed it right away.

One of the last things we did was to clearance the hood for the intake elbow.

We're ready for the dyno, once we have the car tuned we'll install the front bumper assembly.

Here is the dyno sheet from the low boost setting on 93 octane pump gas.

Here is the dyno graph on race gas with more boost! Awesome numbers for a Mustang Chassis Dyno!
