Bob Beam's '99 Hugger Orange Z28 with an ATI ProCharger D-1SC
This update from: 09/24/2008

This picture was taken during our 9/11/04 Dyno Day. You need to check out the video!

Bob Beam and his 1999 Camaro Z28

This is the Prez's baby that here at the shop we call the Orange Crush.  Bob had this car sent up from Texas after purchasing it on Ebay about two and a half years ago for us guys in the back to play with.  And believe me, he enjoys it!

This is a high mileage car, she arrived with 110,000 miles.  It was stock with the exception of a Hooker cat-back exhaust and some sub-frame connectors.  With the cat-back exhaust it put down 260 horsepower on our Mustang dyno.  We performed several bolt on mods for some dyno testing.  The K&N cold air kit made 10 horse at the wheels.  The Hypertech power programmer made an additional 9 rwhp, and of course, with the 160 deg thermostat.  The biggest gain was the Hooker long-tube headers and off road Y-pipe, this made an additional 18 at the wheels.  And check out the ground clearance on those Hooker headers, they are a pipe and half higher than SLP's long tubes!

We welded on a header collector for easy removal of the y-pipe.

Bob was happy with this additional power for awhile, but it didn't take long.  He was caught sitting in the office ordering a D1SC from ATI!  Our first thoughts were to freshen up the bottom end with the supercharger being installed, but Bob wanted to see how reliable these superchargers are with a worn bottom end.

Talk about easy power-  we installed the D1SC with the two intercoolers, added 50lb Holley injectors, a Holley 255lt fuel pump and some Ed Wright tuning for 415 horse at the wheels.  And this was only 7lbs of boost!! This was before we had LS1 edit.  It idles like stock and will fry the tires in third gear.  We also installed Holley plug wires and new spark plugs.  We have had good luck with Champions set at .035".  Of course, non platinums and 2 heat ranges colder than stock.

Here's how the kit looks when it arrives from ATI.  We also weighed the supercharger system and it added 49 lbs.  Bob made the decision to removed the A/C system and that saved 36 lbs. from the front of the car.

Before supercharger-

Getting close-

I have had a lot of request for larger pictures of the installation of the ATI 6 rib assembly on an F Body. Below are additional pictures that I hope will help everyone who is installing their own ATI ProChargers.

Once the supercharger was done the rearend had to be addressed.  Moser was called next and Bob ordered a 12 bolt with 3:73 gears.  We also installed a Spohn adjustable torque arm and lower control arms, a BMR panhard bar, QA1 shocks, and Air Lift air bags.

We were curious about the additional weight of a Moser compared to stock and it was 47 lbs. heavier.  Gun-drilling the axles would save an additional 12 lbs.

The factory clutch lasted several thousand miles before we couldn't get it in gear any more.  Next the tranny was pulled and a Spec stage 3 clutch was installed as well as an Spec aluminum flywheel.  I was surprised at how well the car drives with the aluminum flywheel. The Z28 does not tend to bog in city driving when taking off, and it sure rev's up a lot quicker!!!  A B&M Ripper shifter was also installed.

The battery was relocated with the BMR battery relocation kit.  A very nice kit and it goes in place of the spare tire.

We installed a battery kill lever to disconnect the battery to meet the rules at the tracks for when you have a remote battery installed.

The engine compartment sure looks a lot cleaner! You might notice that we also removed the air conditioning. I never used it anyway!

Bob now has 126,000 miles on the car and not a glitch!  Hats off to ATI for such a reliable supercharger.  The only maintenance that the supercharger needs is an oil change every 6 thousand miles.

I did have trouble coming out of the hole with the aluminum flywheel. The car would lift the front tires, then nosedive back down. I decided to go back to a steel flywheel, which took care of the out of the hole bog.

We installed the Mike Morgansports crank pulley, which netted us 15 psi with the ATI 4" blower pulley that we already had on it. Once we tuned the car, where we backed the timing off to 18 degrees, and set the wide open throttle at 11.7/1, we saw 544 rwhp! Remember that this is on a Mustang Chassis Dyno, on a DynoJet this would be around 590rwhp.

Below is my best time slip of the day at Norwalk Raceway last Friday, October 22nd. The car on the left was mine. I ran out of rpm in 4th gear at the 1000 ft mark, bouncing off the rev limiter the last 320 ft. I currently have 4.11 gears with 28" tall tires, so I am going back to 3:73 gears.
