Bob Beam's 2006 Cobalt SS
This update from:
08/04/2009
I bought
this 2006 Cobalt SS fully loaded with the Eaton supercharger, the Recaro front seats and the Quaife differential this past Summer. Naturally I had to have a Sunburst Orange Cobalt to go with my Hugger Orange Camaro. I bought this car when the fuel prices started skyrocketing and surprisingly, my average fuel mileage has been 33.5 mpg. Not bad for a car with decent performance! The first thing I did was to install a Magnaflow cat back exhaust system, which gave the car a good sound that doesn't sound like a bunch of pissed off bees...
We finally got around to putting my Cobalt on our dyno this morning to see what it would do. We did to back to back pulls and saw 213 fwhp out of the 205 hp rated engine. This is consistant with the info that is out on the forums that these Cobalts are under-rated from the factory. Considering that a bone stock LT1 f body puts out 190 rwhp on our Mustang Chassis Dyno, the 213 fwhp isn't bad at all for a Cobalt SS with a cat back.
Brent used our EFIlive software and picked up another 7 hp at the front tires, along with 7 ft lbs more torque! Not bad for doing nothing other than refining the factory tune! The overall increase in bottom end torque is amazing!
If you look closely at this dyno graph you can see that it is color coded. The colors up on the graph correspond with the colors at the bottom for
engine torque
, engine power
, air fuel ratio
and
boost
.
Number 1 at the bottom of the graph is the modified tune that we added in, and number 2 is the original tune. If you look at the minimum eng torque we really picked up a lot of power. This will make more of a difference than anything, and we may very well have improved the fuel efficiency as well. I'll let you know what I find out on the gas mileage.
Update: I drove this Cobalt home tonight and the added torque made for a huge difference! This car pulls much harder than what it did before, and I noticed the car idles much better than what it did before. These cars are known for having an erratic idle from the factory, and it does not hunt around at all like it did before we tuned it.

Update: This car is for sale for $10,500.00 I just bought a Diesel pick-up 4x4 for a daily driver and tow vehicle. It is a very clean SS that averages 32-33 mpg.
